English Language Learner's Fun With Science Camp
July 27-31 9:00am-4:00pm
The English Language Learner's Fun With Science Camp is a weeklong camp at Northern Kentucky University dedicated to the exposure and education of young minds to the natural sciences. The camp is organized by the Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM), located on campus, and coordinated by Dr. Miriam Steinitz Kannan, a professor of the Biological Sciences at NKU, and Mr. Leo Calderon, Director of Latino Student Affairs at the university.
The camp is a comprehensive, week-long event with a goal of exposing underrepresented minorities to all fields of science, and at the same time, demonstrating how much fun science can be! The experience involves such activities as students isolating their own DNA from cheek cells and making them into necklaces, studying the awesome forces of nature such as magnetism and electricity, and even collecting fish and other wildlife by "electrofishing" at a nearby stream. It also involves a cruise on a floating classroom on the Ohio River! The cost is free to students and includes lunch plus all materials needed for activities.
The camp was first offered in the summer of 2004 with a participation of twelve students. Last year, twenty-four students ranging from eleven years of age to eighteen years took part in the Fun With Science Camp. The participants of last year's camp were quite diverse and included students from Withrow International High School, the Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies, and Our Lady of Grace. Nine faculty members, as well as several NKU students and others from the surrounding community, helped put the camp together this year.
Our goal is not only for all of our students to expand their knowledge of the natural sciences, but also for them to come to realize that science can indeed be exciting and fun!
Every day, we will be updating a blog with a description of the activities of the day, plus lots of pictures. Parents and students alike are welcome to check back in the evenings for updates on the camp!
