are pleased to announce the

CINSAM Scholarship

in Science and Mathematics  

CINSAM, Northern Kentucky University’s Program of Distinction, will provide a limited number of scholarships for students in the disciplines of Biological Science, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Geology and Education (with certification in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Geology,  or Mathematics; or, for elementary education, with an area of concentration in science or mathematics).

Scholars will receive full tuition at in-state rates, a textbook allowance, and a housing allowance.  The number of awards will depend on availability of funds.

About CINSAM

Established by Kentucky’s Council on Post-Secondary Education as the Program of Distinction at Northern Kentucky University, the Center for Integrative Natural Science And Mathematics (CINSAM) is dedicated to enhancing teaching, learning, and applying science and mathematics at all educational levels throughout the region.

It prepares outstanding future teachers by promoting integrative science courses and by providing opportunites for collaboration among education, science, and mathematics faculty and their students.

CINSAM scholarships, a broad range of integrative science courses, externships in business and industry, and research opportunities help develop students capable of handling complex interdisciplinary problems in school, in the workforce, and in their own lives.

CINSAM’s unique mission is advanced across disciplines; among students, teachers, and the private and public sectors; and around teaching, learning, and creative thinking.

Eligibility Criteria

For First-Time Freshmen

In order to be eligible for a CINSAM scholarship, a freshman must:

• be a first-time freshman admitted to NKU.

• must rank in the top 25 percent of his or her high school graduating class.

• have a composite ACT score of 25 or higher.

• declare a major in the discipline from which the scholarship was awarded.

The recipient must maintain a declared major and follow an approved curriculum in one of the following programs:  Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics Physics, Geology and Education (with certification in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Geology,  or Mathematics; or, for elementary education, with an area of concentration in science or mathematics). 

The recipient also must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and a minimum major grade point average of 3.0 and complete a minimum of twenty-eight (28) credit hours (fourteen (14) credit hours per semester) during the academic year.  First-time freshman scholarships are renewable for a maximum of six terms.   The scholarship is automatically renewable.

Selection 

1. First-time freshmen direct all scholarship materials to the CINSAM director, who will forward the applications to the appropriate department. 

2. The department chair attaches the department’s evaluation and submits the application and supporting documentation to the Dean for approval.

3. The Dean provides the list of recipients to the Office of Student Financial Assistance for final approval.

4. The Dean announces the awards to the recipients and to the departments.

For Continuing and Transfer Students  

In order to be eligible for a CINSAM scholarship, a continuing or transfer student must maintain a declared major and follow an approved curriculum in one of the following programs: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics Physics, Geology and Education (with certification in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Geology,  or Mathematics; or, for elementary education, with an area of concentration in science or mathematics).

The recipient also must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and a minimum major grade point average of 3.0 and complete a minimum of twenty-eight (28) credit hours (fourteen (14) credit hours per semester) during the prior academic year. 

Sophomore scholarships are renewable for a maximum of four terms.  Junior scholarships are renewable for a maximum of two terms.  The scholarship is automatically renewable.

Selection

1.  A continuing or transfer student must submit application material to the department chair of the student’s major.

2. The department chair attaches the department’s evaluation and submits the application and supporting documentation to the Dean for approval.

3. The Dean provides the list of recipients to the Office of Student Financial Assistance for final approval.

4. The Dean announces the awards to the recipients and to the departments.

Duration

The scholarship may only be used during the fall and/or spring terms of the year it is first offered.  In subsequent years, the scholarship may be used in in any two of summer, fall, and spring terms of an academic year.

Application Deadline

Students meeting the above qualifications should submit an application by February 1, 2002.  Applications forms are available from  NKU’s Office of Student Financial Assistance (OFA).  They also are available on-line from the OFA web page at  www.nku.edu/~ofa and may either be submitted on-line or on a form printed from the page, completed, and mailed.
